labor day activities

on labor day mom and i wanted to do something fun since the boys decided to start watching season 1 of 24 that weekend and were chained to the couches. so, we got adventurous and went to gizdich ranch to pick apples and just check it out.
shelby did pick some apples, off the ground. even though the website said apple-picking started in september, they weren't ready. we didn't mind, because it was still strawberry picking season!
strawberries are way better anyway!
it was a BIG field and it was chock full of berries just waiting for us.
shelby dug right in.
literally
mom and i had a lot of fun choosing berries.
and then having to get more as they slowly disappeared.
shelby and grandma had no problem with doing farm work.
neither of them mind getting a little dirty.
clearly
oh a strawberry, for me?
nope. for the basket! progress!
never mind.
so many strawberries to eat, such little arms and legs.
oh look! i was there too!
the little buckets were just her size. the other people there were experienced and brought their own BIG baskets. next time we will do that!
and yes, those are maternity pants and shirts, and i do have a little pooch.
it was quite warm that day in watsonville. so after our hard work, we headed back to the ranch and had box lunches which included freshly made sandwiches, chips, a cup of cut strawberries in syrup, a homemade cookie, and an apple juice slush made from their fresh-pressed apple juice (YUM!). it was totally insanely amazingly delicious. it probably tasted better after time in the hot sun. but we are definitely going back and trying it again. most everyone else there got slices of pie with vanilla ice cream. they are apparently "famous" in the watsonville area for their pies! fyi, if you do go, it is definitely a family run place that is small and very homey. not exactly a fancy operation. our first impression of it was like, "did we just drive back to someone's house and little farm?" but once you get past that, it was so fun and so delicious. we are going back!
afterwards, shelby wanted to go to the beach. but it was too far, too busy, and we had to pack up our stuff. so, my mom had the brilliant idea of making shelby her own beach out on the deck!
it was perfect.
all she really wanted was to play in the sand anyway.
and you could see the ocean from the deck! good enough!
it was a great labor day weekend, and bonus, we had hardly any traffic going back because we left before 5! yeah!

That looks like SO much fun! My family growing up always went berry picking and peach picking and I have missed it. Looks like we will have to do it for sure!

I've been to Gizdich Ranch many times. We've always gone for the ollalieberries and strawberries. It would be fun to go and get apples though. I'll have to add it to the list of things to do...sometime!
